I started on a new project over the weekend that I’m really excited about. Although I’m not going to tell you what it is I’m making I will share my process along the way.
I didn’t know where to begin so I opened my notebook and began writing down anything and everything. I would write down the problem, feature or interaction I was solving for at the top of the page. Sometimes ideas were accompanied by a sketch, sometimes by more questions. Words and phrases began entering my mind and no matter how insignificant I thought they were I would write them down.
What was amazing about doing this was that I was able to solve a lot of problems that seemed complicated at the time but turned out to be quite easy. I came up with some new features that spawned from random ideas I never would have thought of had I not journeyed down a path or disorganized thinking.
I don’t know if this is a method or something that has been documented by others as a way of coming up with ideas. But at this early stage it worked out really well for me. After a couple more sessions I plan on turning these into more organized ideas, wireframes, features and interactions.
EDIT: As if my post wasn’t sarcastic enough I received several emails telling me “that’s called brainstroming!” haha. Well good job, you put the pieces together. I actually started this post with the title of “I started Brainstorming for my new project” but decided to act as if I stumbled upon this profound elementary level wizardry.
