    In March of 2007, my friend Josh and I had an apartment together. One day, our building had phone books delivered to our doors. Like normal people; we brought our’s inside. Our downstairs neighbor didn’t. Day after day it sat outside her door.

    Two weeks later we got a second phonebook delivered from a different company. Like before, we all took them inside except for her. This one sat on top of the previous for a few days. We started talking about how funny it would be if they kept stacking up. Instead of waiting for nature to run it’s course we decided to speed up the process. We then added ours to the stack.

    Our goal was to get it as high as her door. After a couple posts about it all of our friends were eager to help. People brought us phone books every time they came over. We would add to the pile every couple days. This went on for a few weeks.

    It got pretty tall. We would see her coming and going everyday, she paid no attention to the stack. I remember one time I came home and her and a friend were out on the deck smoking. I thought to myself: It’s one thing for her to ignore it, but a friend would surely say SOMETHING. I wanted to know what she thought and if she suspected it was us.

    One day I came home and the stack had fallen. We debated on whether to rebuild or to call it quits. Josh had an idea to leave just one and see if she would finally just submit and take it in. He propped it up against the door for her to find when she came home. The next day it was gone.

  2. Kill-Photoset jQuery Plugin for Tumblr

    UPDATE: Tumblr FINALLY updates Photosets

    I couldn’t take it anymore. The flash photo sets on tumblr were killing me. I’ve been wanting to make photo posts with multiple photos sans the flash slideshow WITH high res images since day one. The functionality tumblr provides in this area is obtrusive and inconsistent.

    So last night I wrote a plugin that kills the flash slideshow and pulls in your images via the api. It also allows you to display your HighRes images which for some reason is lacking in text posts w/ photos as well.

    Check out this post as an example.

    All you need to do is include the plugin in your theme and call it like so:

    $('.html_photoset').killPhotoset({
       photoSize: 1280
    });

    You shouldn’t have to change any selectors, I’m just pwning the code that tumblr inserts into your theme. The only thing you’ll need to do is choose a photo size that fits your theme.

    Photo sizes include: 75, 100, 250, 400, 500, 1280 (default)

    Download Kill-Photoset from GitHub

    UPDATE: I get a lot of emails every week from people with no coding experience, asking how to get this baby working. So here is a quick and dirty copy paste version for you. Include this in your theme before the </head> tag.

    <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js"></script>
    <script src="http://static.tumblr.com/xz44nnc/zNHlmnd4b/jquery.killphotoset.js"></script>
    <script>
    $(function () {
       $(".html_photoset").killPhotoset({
       photoSize: 500
      });
    });
    </script>

    After sitting on the domain for over a year, I finally launched something at prtlnd.com. I set a goal to complete this over the weekend and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.

    The idea is to collect every person in Portland who makes things in one place for easy discovery. Pretty simple. Right now I’m accepting designers, developers, and photographers and I will continue to add categories as we fill up the site.

    If you live in Portland and fall into one of those categories you should go add yourself.
